Perfect Getaway For Selfish Reasons
If you like semi rustic conditions and loads of privacy, this is the spot! We booked this rental for a week in February for our first "getaway from it all" vacation. Though Key West is only 40 miles away if you need some excitement and there's plenty of local attractions: restaurants, shops, parks, turtle hospital, beaches, etc.. There's no telephone, TV, radio/stereo, wireless connections (bring your own electronic communication and/or entertainment requirements- we did). We loved the fact that you had absolute privacy on the island. With a comfortable hammock for two and a gas grille to cook with. A place to launch and retrieve your kayaks (provided) and 2 entry points to enter the water for swimming and snorkeling (gear also provided) made it convenient since there is no beach on the island. The composting toilet was non intrusive (no smell like other outdoor facilities and patio furniture was adequate and comfortable for our needs like tanning, dining and stargazing. Sunsets over the water and limited light pollution made for great viewing! More stars than I'd seen in a long time... Oh! There are iguanas on the island too! A nice surprise.
We were met by Bob, the property manager for the island. He was great! He informed us of any requirements we needed to know to ensure our comfort- for the houseboat, the small boat (our transportation to and from the island (30-49 minutes), the generator and any limitations that might require his assistance. Brought us out and got us settled, gave further instruction regarding the houseboat, told us about the current fishing trends (fishing gear also provided), gave us his business card and left us to enjoy our idyllic surroundings. Which we did, enjoying the quiet solitude that was so desperately needed.
As for detractors I'd say that the limited hot water, the houseboat's water capacity in general-fine for 2 water conservative people, and the noisy generator on the island were the main ones for us. A quieter generator and a electrical connection in one or both pavilions would be great additions for plugging in a radio for music, powering a computer, etc. We were slightly put out by the cleanliness- dog hair from a previous guest and such but we quickly took care of it on our own. The electrical system on the houseboat was touchy but functional. The refrigerator is on the small side but we made daily ice trips to fill the coolers provided. Can't advise on heating or cooling because there was no need for us at the time. Not all windows had screens which made bugs a mild concern.
Would we rent this property again-YOU BET, absolutely!
Thanks Bob and Shari. Thanks Pam. We had a great and relaxing experience!
