Renting an island not just for the rich

(CNN) -- Lori Hyde was hunting for a unique vacation experience when her curiosity was piqued by Pretty Joe Rock, a tiny speck of land in the waters off Marathon in the Florida Keys with just enough room for a two-bedroom home and a few clusters of mangroves.

She and her husband spent a week on the petite island in February, relaxing and enjoying each other's company, with no one else around but the resident birds.

"I was looking for a rental that would be private so that came up as I was searching around and we were like, well it can't get much more private than that," said Hyde, 43, a stay-at-home mom who lives in Woodbridge, Virginia.

    Pretty Joe Rock July 2016

My wife and 2 boys (15&17) stayed for a week over July 4th. We watched fireworks from our deck. Sunsets were beautiful. We all loved the island. The iguanas did not bother us. We actually enjoyed watching them. Yes iguanas poop and there is extensive decking around the house that you share the with the iguanas. There are hoses available that can be used to squirt off the decks when needed.
It was a very relaxing week and was amazing to be on your own island. Fishing gear, snorkeling gear, cooler, crab traps, nets etc. were all included. We saw lots of crabs, lobster, parrot fish, and even a Moray eel from the decks.
We hope to return again some day. Thanks for a great vacation!

    Quite Get Away

Very private, and quite place to stay. place is comfortable. However it needs a lot of attention! The iguana's are awful!!! Poop everywhere! Had to wash decks every morning, and the hammock is covered with it!!! The stove was not working , and the main AC went out! They did off to come fix the AC, but it was going to be a big ordeal so we just made do!

Seashell Key was the perfect spot for our honeymoon! We loved the experience of our own private island. Can't beat morning coffee with the sunrise and a glass of wine with the sunsets. We spent everyday snorkeling, kayaking, and swimming literally right off the awesome decks. The house was well equipped with everything we would need for inside and out. Can't wait to go back!!

We do wish, however, that we had read a review that addressed the iguanas on the island. There are definitely more than a couple large lizards. They were not afraid to approach - even to the extent of climbing on the chaise lounge we were using. We are animal lovers and actually looked forward to the iguana experience when we booked the island. We ended up avoiding the main deck during certain times of the day when the dominant iguanas came to "visit". We also felt the need to clean up the decks and railings from the iguana poop:) Did this ruin our week? Absolutely not. We got some cool photos and memories. If we owned the island, we would definitely think about relocating some lizards...

If you are looking for a unique and private vacation spot - Seashell Key is the place.

    Not Bad For Winding Down

I figured the internet would be shotty due to being on an island at all. Turns out, it was perfect! I think I made more headway in my work while relaxing on that island with a laptop than I do at the office! Will be back soon!

I would give 5 stars, but that lizard would not leave me alone. He clearly think he owns the place, and maybe he does.

Already Booked Our Next Vacation Here.

Staying on a private island is an incredible experience. I never thought I could afford a private home on a private island until I found rentmyisland online. Coming from Wisconsin, we were able to get out of the cold and see amazing things that I never thought I would see. We saw dolphins swimming by, sting rays right at the dock, an octopus stroll by in 2 feet of water, a giant crab in a conch shell and tons of fish and birds. The home was beautiful and romantic. We did a lot less sightseeing in the keys then we planned on. We spent most our time on or around the island. The sunsets are entrancing. I never thought we would sit around watching a sunset. I was wrong. Several times we sat on the deck with a glass of wine, watching the sunset and talking or just listening to nature.

We like to experience different vacation locations every year, but now my wife and I found a place we have to go back to. We will probably make this an annual trip. We already booked for next year. We highly recommend booking well ahead of time though. At this reasonable a price, there aren't a lot of openings.

P.S. We highly recommend Key Colony Inn and Key's Fisheries for lunch.

    Best Vacation Ever!!!

We had the opportunity to stay on the island in late October. We brought my son to celebrate his 3rd birthday and my 4 year old daughter. It was the best vacation ever! Kids loved the boat ride over, watching fish from the dock and even had lunch with an iguana! Apparently it liked pb&j because he jumped out of the tree to come enjoy a few bites! My husband and I loved the snorkeling, crystal clear water, and fishing. We were also able to take the kids on many kayak rides. We were able to cook fresh fish in every night. The house was wonderful, very clean and George, the caretaker was such a pleasure to work with. We cannot wait to go back! I asked the kids if they would rather go back to Disney World or the island and they both said the island!

    Heaven On Earth!

My husband and I just had our Honeymoon on the AMAZING island Pretty Joe Rock! By far the VERY BEST vacation we have ever had! The island is gorgeous and the house is just as beautiful! Everyone we were in contact with from booking to boat instructions were wonderful! Very helpful and very accommodating. The island has all of the amenities of a fancy resort and then some. You have the privacy and seclusion that a vacation should be. We saw dolphins off the back deck, the largest most beautiful iguanas, and plenty of fish around the island. Absolutely beautiful! If you don't enjoy yourself on this island then its your own fault! :) We definitely will be back many many times to come! Thank you to the owners and staff that make this island so welcoming and wonderful! We love Pretty Joe Rock!!

    Best Vacation Of Our Lives!!!

We travel frequently all over of the world. But our family vacation on a private island was outstanding. My wife and I traveled with my 17 year old daughter to Pretty Joe Rock and was blown away with this private island. Inside the house, you don't know you are on an island. All the creature comforts. Very clean and the facilities of your own home. We fished, kayaked, snorkeled and played in the water all week. Relaxing and playing at our leisure. Our own little world. No itinerary. Sunsets were amazing, water was crystal clear. The boat gave us freedom to adventure out or go to shore to a nearby restaurant.
This island is perfect for couples or a small family. You have privacy and seclusion if you seek it. Spectacular for water lovers.

My husband and I spent the week here with our young adult sons. We had done our research, read all the reviews, and figured we knew what to expect. We were absolutely delighted. From the minute Jim met us at the dock, everything was just right. Yes, it is a beach cottage isolated on an island in a tropical climate- for us it was idyllic. Family bonding time was priceless. Speaking of which, Even the cost was pretty reasonable compared to the price of two hotel rooms and a boat for the week. Sunsets on the deck were amazing. In the mornings we kayaked around the bay, and met two manatees! We snorkelled, swam, and fished from 'the Rock.'
Marathon has lots to do, especially if you love the outdoors. Tilden's dive shop were great. We used the kayaks a lot. Rented bikes at Overseas Outfitters- they give you a full 24 hrs on a day rental. Biking over the old stretch of the seven mile bridge to Pigeon Key was fabulous.
The bad part about our trip here was that it had to end...we hope to come back soon!

    Pretty Joe Rock

This is truly a different kind of vacation, very relaxing. Owners and managers are very easy to work with. There is a boat waiting when you arrive to take you to the island. Once there, it is just so private that you feel like you are away from the world. With just a short boat ride you can get back to the shore and plenty of places to eat. Lots of shopping around the area also. Lots of iguana's on the island (big iguana). Very tame and like to eat. We fed them a few times and they expect food from then on. Next time we will not feed them and maybe they will stay farther away. Don't eat at key fisheries, bad food and service. Best vacation I've had in a long time. We will return. Heck, I'm ready to go back now!

    The Best Vacation Ever

Pretty Joe Rock was more than I expected. When we arrived and I said the pictures didn't do it justice and by the end of the week I really didn't want to leave. With Key West 45 minutes away, I am glad we went on the second day, not sure I would have left the island later in the week. You can watch the sunrise from one deck and sunset from the off of either dock and swim around everywhere... Sunset grill is 10 minutes by boat and Keys Fishery is 5 minutes ........both are excellent for drinks and lunch....Dinner was on the island every night. The property owner and staff of pretty joe rock are the best hands down...........will be back...

The Most Wonderful Family Vacation Time Ever

My husband and I brought our 19 year old daughter and 16 year old son to the island to enjoy some family time before everyone is out of the house and doing their own thing. We all agreed that it was the best vacation time EVER. Being on the island with just the family brought us all back together. We cooked meals together in the fully equipped kitchen. We played games after the sun went down (some board games are provided and we brought some). But the days were amazing! Because the house comes with a boat, we were able to go out fishing and lobstering and swimming whenever we wanted.

Swimming around the island was fun. Under the coral island are tons of fish, several lobster, stone crabs and even a tiny octopus who changed colors depending what rock he was on. The birds that landed on the island were amazing.

Our days started with a home-cooked breakfast then fun on the water, then lunch in town where we would pick up enough groceries for dinner and breakfast the next day, then back out on the water, cooking dinner together and watching the sun set. We would play games until bed time and then do it again. Marathon is only a few minutes boat ride away and anything that you need can be found there. We spent a lot of time in the bait shop and the locals were very helpful telling us what we needed.

I loved sitting on the back deck to watch the sun set and on the front dock to watch the moon rise. The master bedroom shower is so fun. You step outside into the glass enclosure and shower with plants growing up around you. Sounds crazy? You just have to experience it.

We ALL loved watching the iguanas. They are amazing animals. No reason to be scared of them, they are just cool. Every day I would get up and walk around the island in my PJ's looking to see where they were sunning themselves and most every night I would take a flashlight and try to find where each one had decided to sleep that night.

As you can tell, we were entertained while on the island or on the water. We even saw a small shark when we were fishing way out in the gulf. Nothing too close to the island. If I could afford to buy Pretty Joe Rock, it would belong to me. I would live there full time and never leave. Enjoy your time, you won't be disappointed.

    A Great Thanksgiving

Just wanted to send an email to say what a truly fantastic time we had on Pretty Joe Rock over Thanksgiving week. We could not have asked for a better experience. The island is secluded enough to spend some long days catching up with my wife and children but literally seconds to the mainland if we decided on other plans. I cannot say how grateful I am to have had that week to have my family truly all to myself. I work in a steel mill and lots of overtime is a part of my week to week life, so the time on Pretty Joe Rock was great time with my family. The home was much bigger than expected and very roomy for our family, with the full kitchen we didn't need to leave the island unless it was in our plans. The kitchen was stocked with basic spices, all cookware, and the home had toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags etc. so it was nice not to have to purchase those items. The jet tub was a great relaxation after a day in the sun. My children loved the snorkeling around the island and the fishing was fantastic. We caught mangrove snapper for Thanksgiving and it was by far the best fish we have ever eaten. Along with the snapper we caught bonnethead sharks, barracuda and a slew of other species. Had our lines broken several times by something that was just too much for us to handle but gave us a great thrill. Thanks so much for supplying us with all the needed fishing and snorkel gear and the kayaks were great for some adventure. My son was able to actually film his underwater experience all week and has video of the environment below the surface. A go pro camera is essential in the keys, inexpensive way to film and take pics while snorkeling or diving. The iguanas on the island were much more entertaining than we would have ever guessed, the kids fed them by hand. For as large as they are we were surprised at how gentle they were when we fed them. For future guests they love small pieces of banana and pineapple or just about any fruit cut into bite size pieces. The boat was just as much fun as anything, fishing and snorkeling in the shallows and fit our needs. Any family looking for some private time with family and a completely self contained vacation convenient to attractions should definitely look into this property. Jon, the property manager in the keys, was a great help also and was immediately available if we needed anything and did a great job getting us out to the island well after midnight during a long day of travel. We have found our only vacation rental in the keys and are so glad we found I highly recommend Bob, Jeanne and the crew at for a vacation to the Florida keys. They went well beyond what any other company ever has for me or my family to ensure our trip was everything we expected.

Have a great day and we will return as soon as we get a chance.

    Stayed Thanksgiving week of 2012
